Posted on 11/7/2024

The CGC-certified rookie card of the Everton legend was issued in early comics printed in the United Kingdom.

CGC Cards™ recently certified an extremely rare vintage soccer card that is the first of its kind in the CGC Cards Pop Report for sports cards. The rookie card of one of the greatest forwards in English soccer history is a 1925 D.C. Thomson Adventure and Vanguard Football Photos #5 Dixie Dean that received a grade of CGC 5.

In addition, the card was encapsulated and secured in CGC Cards' new holder for vintage sports cards, which are tailored to the unique sizes of vintage cards and eliminate the need for an additional insert within the holder. To learn more about these state-of-the-art holders, click here.

In the early 1900s, D.C. Thomson & Co. in Scotland published several newspapers, comics and magazines. Two of the comics published by D.C. Thomson were "Adventure" (1921-1961) and "The Vanguard" (1923-1926), which in 1925 included a single photo card of soccer players in each issue.

Five different cards were released each week, meaning you had to buy multiple issues of the comics to find all five cards. The photo cards featured black and white portraits of some of the most popular soccer players of the era across the top tier of English leagues. The backs of the photos contained player information, such as their name, club name, position, height, weight, age and a short bio.

The 1925 set of photo cards featured soccer stars and veterans but also included a number of rookie cards, as well. The premier card in the set is the rookie card of William Ralph "Dixie" Dean, who was best known as the longtime forward of Everton from 1925 to 1937.

Dean was a prolific goal scorer who was particularly skilled in the air, scoring many of his goals through headers. Regarded as one of the best attackers and goal scorers to ever play top-flight soccer in England, he still holds the record for most goals in a single season in English soccer. During the 1927-28 season, Dean scored the record-setting 60 goals, leading Everton to a title-winning season that year.

After a dozen seasons at Everton, injuries caught up to Dean. He moved on and played for three other clubs before retiring as a player in 1940 as one of the most accomplished attackers of his generation. Dean was honored posthumously in 2001, with the club erecting a statue of the Everton icon outside of their stadium, Goodison Park. In addition, in 2002, Dean was inducted into the inaugural class of the English Football Hall of Fame.
