The Mobile Suit Gundam series is one of the most iconic media franchises in the world. It is credited for revolutionizing the giant robot genre of the 1980s and introducing the modern mecha genre. The franchise’s importance cannot be understated, and fans are always clamoring for the newest release. So, with the popularity of the Gundam franchise and the increased popularity of TCGs, the next step was clear: turning Mobile Suit Gundam into a TCG!
The Gundam Card Game was released in North America in summer 2025 by Bandai — the same company responsible for other popular TCGs such as the One Piece Card Game, Union Arena and the Digimon Card Game. The card game allows fans to experience the world of Gundam through beautifully illustrated cards depicting pilots, Gundam units, base settings and events from the anime, all ranging from the original 1979 series to modern releases.
How to Play the Gundam Card Game
There are four types of cards in the Gundam Card Game: Units, Pilots, Commands and Bases. Additionally, there are four card colors: blue, green, red and white. Players can construct decks using up to four copies of one card, using any combination of card types and cards from any Gundam series. However, decks can only be constructed using up to two card colors. Finished decks must contain a total of 50 cards. In addition to the base deck, players will need 10 Resource cards and (if needed) the appropriate amount of Token cards for their deck.
Players begin by drawing five cards from their deck, placing Token cards in the Base and Resource fields, then laying down six cards from the top of the deck into the Shield section of the playing field. Shield cards represent life points and protect the player from opposing attacks. If a player manages to destroy their opponent’s six Shield cards and then deal damage to the opponent directly, they win the game.
Player one starts by drawing a card from the top of their deck and laying down one Resource card in their Resource field. Players will then begin playing cards from their hand. By using the Resource cards in the Resource area, players can play any Unit or Pilot card into their Battle Area. Any Pilot can be paired with any Unit. Once they are finished setting up their Battle Area, players can then attack their opponent directly or attack their opponent’s rested Unit cards.
