CGC Cards Registry Featured Set of the Month: The First Chapter Cold Foils

Foil and holographic cards have always been fan-favorite collector items, whether they’re reverse holo Pokémon cards or Magic: The Gathering’s rare Surge Foil cards. Collectors often enjoy collecting foil cards for their master sets, even if they aren’t necessarily expensive or rare. Many will add them to their master sets alongside normal variants of a card, while some collectors simply enjoy collecting foils for their holographic or sparkly effects.

When Disney Lorcana was released in 2024, it introduced its own type of foil cards — cold foils. Cold foiling is a modern foiling process that prints and presses a foil layer to the top of a card instead of in between layers, making the whole card shiny and smooth instead of just focusing on the art box. Though not uncommon in the TCG world, cold foils are still seldom used in modern sets, with the foil type just starting to become more popular in recent years.
One advantage of the cold foiling process is that, since the foil is on top of the card and not in between printing layers, the cards are less likely to bend or warp over time, keeping them in stellar condition even after time spent in binders or decks. Because of this, collectors will often send their cold foil Lorcana cards to CGC for grading after pulling them or using them in decks.

The CGC Cards Registry currently has 28 competing sets in The First Chapter – Cold Foil category, with the leading set belonging to Sensei Ryan. Sensei Ryan’s As cold as ICE… Registry set is 66% complete and includes more than 100 cold foil Disney Lorcana cards, all of which are graded CGC Gem Mint 10 or CGC Pristine 10. That’s an impressive feat!
“Ever since my first visit to Walt Disney World as a kid I’ve been a passionate fan for all things Disney,” says Sensei Ryan in his set’s Owner Comments. “As such, it is no surprise that my passion for Disney continued into my adulthood… My goals for this set are to have every card in graded CGC 10 Gem [Mint] or Pristine [10] Mint along with 100% completion.”
So far, Sensei Ryan is making leaps and bounds in their progress with their Cold Foil Registry Set. Not only is it the highest-ranking set in the category, but As cold as ICE… has also received a Best in Set Type award and a Best Set of the Year award (2024). Good going, Sensei Ryan!
