CGC Cards Registry Featured Set: 2024 Topps Series 1 Baseball

Posted on 4/9/2026

This month's featured set highlights Topps' flagship baseball product, which sets the bar for releases as each MLB season gets underway.

As the first weeks of the 2026 MLB season roll on, the new season was initially ushered in by the release of Topps' flagship set: 2026 Topps Series 1 Baseball. The first run of Topps baseball cards hit shelves prior to Opening Day, giving MLB fans a fresh batch of MLB veterans and rookies to collect.

As a foundational set of the hobby that has been around for decades, Topps Series 1 Baseball has become a tradition unto itself. The set is often the first official product in which fans get to see veterans in their new uniforms after offseason moves. The set also features prospects who have been called up recently and have made their big-league debuts. With a 350-card base set that anchors the checklist for each series, collectors have plenty to look forward to with these modern card sets.

Although rare color parallels, short-printed inserts, memorabilia cards and autographed cards will always be the most sought-after issues within the Topps flagship set, tracking down the full base set is a classic way of collecting the series. Baseball collectors can track down raw versions of the 350-card base set fairly easily, but acquiring certified high-graded cards from the set is a much slower and challenging process.

As CGC revisits one of the modern Topps Series 1 sets, one registry owner is well on their way with an impressive collection of graded cards from the 2024 series. CGC Cards Registry set owner rjr2167's top-ranked 2024 Topps (Series 1 Only) set showcases many of the key base cards of the popular set. The set owner has completed approximately 20% of the total set, a number that includes a whopping 72 cards and 22 Top Pops, helping the set owner earn the prestigious Top Ranked distinction.

The 2024 Topps Series 1 set came with a fresh front design that includes a black border surrounding the top third of the card that fades into a white border surrounding the bottom two-thirds of the card. A rounded-off inner border and team nickname at the top right corner replicate neon lighting, adding a pop of color that stands out against the black and white border. Team logos rest in the bottom left corner on top of a small baseball diamond, which is also made to look like neon lighting. The player's name and abbreviated position round out the front design.

Meanwhile, the backs are straightforward, with an all-white background and no borders. They also feature all the vital information and statistics collectors have come to expect from Topps cards through the decades. At the top is the player's name, height, weight, hometown and more. The middle contains a chart that features the player's statistics by season and their MLB career totals. Below that is a paragraph that contains a short bio or reference to a career feat that is connected to the player.

The 2024 Topps Series 1 set showcases numerous All-Stars and important rookie cards. Current superstars like Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Juan Soto, Mookie Betts and many more veterans are among the names on the checklist. Key rookie cards include Elly De La Cruz, Tyler Soderstrom, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jasson Dominguez, Colton Cowser, Evan Carter and more.

The annual 350-card Topps flagship base set is also well known for featuring other unique cards like Future Stars, League Leaders and Team cards. The Future Stars cards feature some of the MLB's most promising newcomers. League Leaders highlights the leading players in several statistical categories from the previous season, including American League and National League home run leaders, batting average leaders, RBI leaders, strikeout leaders and more.

Topps Team cards used to showcase a full team photo, often based on official team photos taken before the season started. Team cards have been around since Topps' earliest baseball sets from the early 1950s. These days, Topps team cards instead feature in-action shots of teams walking on or off the field, celebrating together after a win or other team-oriented images captured in real-time.

As has been the case since 2005, Topps Series 1 is the first of three 350-card sets to release each season, followed by Series 2 and a final Update Series. Although the 2024 Topps flagship set came in a series trio as well, this particular set owner chose to focus solely on Series 1 and has built a solid collection that could turn into a complete graded set one day.

While some high-end collectors may choose to spend big and chase premium sets, collecting foundational sets like Topps Series 1 from any season has been a mainstay for decades and is much more accessible to the average collector. That is why Topps' flagship baseball set is a cornerstone of the hobby and the sport each and every spring as baseball returns to Major League cities around the country.
