Breaking Down the $12.6 Million Mickey Mantle Card Sale: A Collect This! Exclusive

Posted on 8/28/2022

Heritage Auctions' Joe Orlando discusses the biggest sale in the history of sports collecting.

On Sunday, August 28, 2022, Heritage Auctions sold a Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card for $12.6 million, the most ever paid for a sports card…or, for that matter, any sports collectible of any form, period. In an exclusive interview, Heritage Auctions' Executive Vice President of Sports Joe Orlando sat down with Collect This! host Alan Goldsher and discussed why Mantle is such a transcendent figure amongst collectors, as well as the beauty of the card itself.

“This was arguably one of the biggest moments in the history of sports collecting,” Goldsher said. “When Heritage announced the Mantle card was going up for auction, most predicted it would break the sales record. But few suspected it would straight-up shatter it.”

Goldsher added, “Joe Orlando is the ideal person to talk about the Mick and the card. Not only does he know sports collecting history backwards and forwards, but he’s a walking baseball encyclopedia who’s passionate about GOATs like Mantle.”
