CGC Trading Cards Grades Elusive Magic: The Gathering Promo

Every so often, CGC Trading Cards gets the opportunity to grade a card that hasn’t yet been graded by any other third-party grading company. Recently, the team had one of these cards come through the door.

The card in question is a Chinese Loyal Retainers, Magic: The Gathering (2022) The Brothers’ War 30th Anniversary Promo graded CGC 9.5. Loyal Retainers is a powerful Creature card that allows a player to sacrifice it and retrieve a Legend card from the graveyard, which enables versatile deck strategy. It was first released in the Portal Three Kingdoms set, then re-released later in four other Magic sets.

This 2022 version of Loyal Retainers is printed exclusively in Simplified Chinese. Although it has been released worldwide, the promo will not appear in any other language. Wizards of the Coast says, as part of their Magic: The Gathering 30th anniversary celebration, they’d like to share several cards that will only be printed in one of the non-English languages that the Magic TCG is available in.

Wizards of the Coast is celebrating MTG’s 30th anniversary in 2023 by taking its players down memory lane. Players who attend a prerelease event during the rest of 2022 and 2023 will receive one of 30 promo cards, each of which is a reprint of a promo that has influenced the game in some way, including cards like Windfall, Glen Elendra Archmage and Exalted Angel.

Fans who attended The Brothers’ War prerelease in November 2022 had the chance to receive this Loyal Retainers promo. Only one copy was distributed per store, making the promo exceedingly rare.
