Whether it was bought by a huge Cowboys fan, a dedicated collector or both, this high-grade Staubach rookie card is a prized addition to any collection. Numerous bidders vied for the opportunity to own this example, which is graded CSG 9. The eBay listing garnered an impressive 47 bids before the final price landed at $4,739.

The #200 Roger Staubach was part of the popular 1972 Topps Football set, which contained 351 trading cards. There were three different series that came out that year, with the Staubach card being part of the second series. In addition, there were three subsets, including League Leaders, 1971 Playoff Highlights and All-Pros. Throughout the whole set and its subsets, 84 out of the 351 cards featured Hall of Famers. Staubach’s rookie card is the most desired and most expensive among the classic set.

The 1972 Topps Football set has a clean and simple look to the cards’ design. Each has straight borders around the edge, block lettering and large photos of the players. Pink borders surround Staubach’s image as he looks off into the distance posing for the camera in his white Cowboys jersey without a helmet. At CSG 9, this particular card stands alone as the highest graded among 177 in the CSG Population Report.

Roger Staubach was a US Naval officer before joining the Dallas Cowboys as a 27-year-old rookie. Staubach took over as the starter in Week 8 of the 1971 season and rattled off 10 straight wins, including a Super Bowl VI victory. During his 11-season NFL career spent entirely with the Dallas Cowboys, Staubach would win a second Super Bowl, a Super Bowl MVP award and became a six-time Pro Bowler. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018.
