CGC Trading Cards Grades Master's Scroll Pokémon Card a Pristine 10

This rare Japanese promo is also the first example in the CGC Trading Cards Population Report.

CGC Trading Cards® continues to see submissions of some of the greatest trading cards in the collecting world. Along with five Black Lotus Magic: The Gathering cards and a Base Set Charizard graded CGC Pristine 10 that we recently certified, CGC Trading Cards had the pleasure of grading its first Master’s Scroll — a rare Japanese Pokémon promo.

The Master’s Scroll, Pokémon (2010) Japanese LEGEND Pokémon Daisuke Club Master Rank Prize Promo Holo is graded CGC Pristine 10 with sub-grades of 9.5 for Centering and 10 for Surface, Corners and Edges. This is the first graded example in the CGC Trading Cards Population Report.

Master’s Scroll was given out exclusively to Master Rank members of the Pokémon Daisuke Club in Japan in 2010. While the Daisuke Club was known for giving out promotional cards, Master’s Scroll was special because it was the last card to be given out by the club before they retired their Action Point system and, with it, promotional card distributions.

To obtain the card, Japanese Pokémon fans not only had to be a member of the club, but also had to earn a staggering 8,600 Action Points through attending Pokémon events to trade for the card. There were very few Master Rank trainers by the end of the promotional period, so it’s likely that very few of these Master’s Scroll promos were given out before the Action Point system was abolished.

“The only thing that kept this card from a Perfect 10 grade was a slight centering issue,” said Matt Quinn, Vice President of CGC Trading Cards. “That being said, a CGC Pristine 10 grade is not easy to accomplish, and this Master’s Scroll is a beautiful example that deserves the grade. We’re thrilled to have such a well-preserved promo representing the first graded example in the CGC Trading Cards Population Report.”

CGC-certified Pristine 10 cards must have perfect centering and no evidence of any manufacturing or handling defects. Corners must appear perfect to the naked eye and Gem Mint under 10x magnification. The surface of the card must also be free of print spots while displaying perfect gloss. For this Master’s Scroll to have achieved a CGC Pristine 10 grade, it had to have been well cared for since it was received in 2010.
