Record-breaking Charizard Takes Advantage of CGC Cards' ReHolder Special

Posted on 8/9/2023

Cards previously graded CGC 9.5 have been realizing incredible prices, as collectors rush to resubmit for the CGC Cards Gem Mint 10 grade.

In July, CGC Trading Cards® and Certified Sports Guaranty® (CSG®) combined into CGC Cards™, immediately becoming one of the world’s largest and most prominent card grading services. The merger introduced several collector-friendly updates, including a new Gem Mint 10 grade, a sleek new label, the ability to submit without a paid membership and a limited-time reduced ReHolder fee. Hundreds of collectors have already taken advantage of the CGC Cards ReHolder special, either to convert their CGC 9.5-graded cards to the new CGC Gem Mint 10 grade or to get the new black label. Some of these ReHolder submissions include high-value cards — including a Base Set 1st Edition Charizard that recently broke records in a Heritage Auctions sale.

The Charizard, Pokémon (1999) Base Set 1st Edition Holo graded CGC Gem Mint 10 (on the updated CGC Cards Grading Scale) realized $87,500, which is the highest price realized for a CGC-certified English Base Set 1st Edition Holo Charizard card on Heritage Auctions’ platform. The most recent public sale of a Base Set 1st Edition Charizard in CGC 9.5 before the announcement of the merger went for $32,400 in March of 2023.

“This exceptional Base Set 1st Edition Charizard is one of many CGC 9.5 cards that were bought after the announcement of the new CGC Cards, with the clear intention of submitting for ReHolder and getting the CGC Cards Gem Mint 10 grade,” said Matt Quinn, Vice President of CGC Cards. “We’re thrilled that cards of this caliber are benefitting from CGC Cards’ industry-standard grading scale and industry-best holder and label.”

CGC Cards uses an industry-standard 10-point grading scale topped by a Gem Mint 10 and, for the best of the best, a Pristine 10. Cards previously graded Gem Mint 9.5 are exactly equivalent to Gem Mint 10 under the updated grading scale, and are reflected in the CGC Cards Certification Verification, Population Report and Registry resources with the Gem Mint 10 grade. Additionally, the sleek new CGC Cards label puts the spotlight where it should be — on the cards. Collectors and dealers have embraced the changes, and CGC Cards’ submissions have skyrocketed since launch.
