CGC Cards Proudly Grades the Women on Topps Collection

Posted on 2/6/2024

Collector Women on Topps chose CGC Cards to certify and grade some of her most prized cards from her extensive personal collection of famous women in sports.

CGC Cards™ was proud to recently grade cards from a wide range of sports, many of which feature some of the world's greatest female athletes. Collector Annemarie, also known as Women on Topps on social media, has one of the most extensive and impressive card collections showcasing women in sports from the past and present.

She recently entrusted some of her most coveted cards to CGC Cards' expert grading services. CGC Cards is honored to have been chosen to certify a portion of Annemarie's superb personal collection, and we're excited to share some of these amazing collectibles with the card collecting community.

Annemarie's love of women's sports and athletes began years ago. Not only is she a longtime advocate of women's sports, but she is also a proponent for other female collectors in the hobby. As Annemarie leads by example with her extensive collection, her CGC Cards submission includes more than 40 cards of female athletes ranging from vintage cards from the 1930s to modern-day athletes.

"I've been a collector my entire life," Annemarie told CGC Cards. "What particularly makes this collection and my focus on women's sports cards so personally important to me is the role that women's sports (both as a participant and as a spectator) has played in my life and how the visibility and work of these athletes have helped transform society into a place where it's easier to be me every single day."

The Women on Topps collection is a history lesson in women's sports, starting with arguably the first-ever female sports star, Babe Didrikson. The American multi-sport athlete shined in basketball, baseball, golf and track and field. She was a star in the 1932 Summer Olympics, winning two gold medals and a silver medal in track and field. She later turned her attention to golf fulltime and won 10 LPGA major championships, becoming the most popular of any male or female golfer of her era.

Didrikson was voted the Female Athlete of the Year six times by the Associated Press, once for track and field and five times for golf. In 1950, she was voted the Greatest Female Athlete of the First Half of the Century. In 1999, the AP recognized Didrikson as Woman Athlete of the 20th Century and Sports Illustrated ranked her second all-time behind heptathlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Didrikson's impact on women sports cannot be understated, and this pair of early track and field collectibles from the 1930s that are part of the Women on Topps collection are a direct link to her incredible legacy.

The Women on Topps collection features numerous legends of women's sports, such as the aforementioned Jackie Joyner-Kersee and tennis icon Billie Jean King. The American track and field star dominated her competition in the 1980s and 1990s and is recognized as one of the most decorated Olympians of all-time, winning three gold, one silver and two bronze Olympic medals. Annemarie's Joyner-Kersee sports card features a piece of the athlete's game-used track and field uniform, a true piece of history from one of the greatest athletes ever.

Another unique collectible in the Women on Topps collection is a modern-day card that features tennis legend Billie Jean King's hand-signed autograph. The American is the former No. 1 tennis player in the world. King won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 singles, 16 women's doubles and 11 mixed doubles titles. In 1972, the tennis superstar was the joint winner of the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year award and, in 1975, she was one of the Time Persons of the Year. King also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. The card with King's signature is another highlight of this amazing personal collection.

The Women on Topps collection showcases top female surfers, softball players, Olympic swimmers and more. It also features a who's who of famous basketball players through the years, including legends like Cheryl Miller and some of today's brightest stars like Sabrina Ionescu.

Basketball runs deep in the Miller family, with Cheryl and her brother Reggie each garnering Hall of Fame status. Miller is a two-time NCAA champion who was named the Naismith College Player of the Year three years in a row in the mid-1980s. She also won gold medals in several international competitions, including the 1984 Summer Olympics, while playing for the USA National team. Miller was so talented, she was drafted into multiple pro basketball leagues, including the USBL, which was a men's league. However, knee injuries derailed her playing career, so she went into coaching and later became an NBA reporter and analyst. Having an extremely rare card featuring Miller during her collegiate years at USC that is hand-signed by the star once again shows the quality of Annemarie's PC.

"The basketball cards in my collection have a real prominent place because they have a very prominent role in the history of women's sport," Annemarie shared. "I particularly have a focus and a passion for athletes that were change agents in societies, that pushed the boundaries of the role of women. Not just in sport, but in society through their athleticism."

Even though she's only been in the WNBA since 2020, Sabrina Ionescu has already established herself as the best shooter in the league, drawing comparisons to Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, who most consider to be the greatest shooter ever. As a two-time All-Star and WNBA Three-Point Shootout champion, she's looking to help bring the New York Liberty their first championship, as she builds her legacy as an all-time great. Ionescu's Prizm Silver parallel rookie card is another stellar addition to Annemarie's wide range of collectibles spanning decades of female excellence in sports.

These exceptional cards are just a small portion of the Women on Topps collection that CGC Cards is proud to be a part of. Like many collectors, Annemarie chose to entrust her personal collection to CGC Cards for several reasons.

"For me, CGC immediately came to mind as a company that created really quality slabs (when I hold them, I feel the quality). I think they present information really well. They're good-looking slabs, and it's a company that's had a place in the industry for years," Annemarie said of her choice to grade with CGC Cards. "The combination of all those things, with the value they present collectors in terms of price and turnaround time, made it, for me, obvious that CGC would be the partner" for her personal collection.
