Corporate History Pokémon Cards Certified by CGC Cards Lead Recent PWCC Auctions

Posted on 12/7/2023

Meanwhile, Joe DiMaggio and Grant Hill rarities certified by CGC Cards were among the sports cards that stood out in the November and December auctions.

Dozens of CGC-certified Pokémon cards from the 2021 Creatures Deck Corporate History set realized impressive prices in recent PWCC auctions, including a Marnie graded CGC Gem Mint 10 that sold for over $40,000. These were just a few of the thousands of CGC-certified TCGs, sports cards and non-sports cards that were graded through the partnership between CGC Cards™ and PWCC Marketplace and then sold in November and December 2023.

The Marnie, Pokémon (2021) Japanese Creatures Deck: Corporate History – 198/190 20th Anniversary – 2020 graded Gem Mint 10 realized $48,000 on December 4. It is one of five examples graded CGC Gem Mint 10 in the CGC Cards Population Report, with only one graded higher. Marnie was heavily used in TCG tournament decks due to its effect allowing players to both replenish their hands and disrupt their opponents’ hands by making them shuffle their cards back into their decks. The Corporate History version of the card has text on the back celebrating Creatures Inc.’s 25th anniversary.

Two other CGC-certified Corporate History Pokémon cards realized $40,800 on December 4. These were a Chansey, Pokémon (2021) Japanese Creatures Deck: Corporate History – 25th Anniversary – 1995 graded CGC 9.5, and a Charizard, Pokémon (2021) Japanese Creatures Deck: Corporate History – 25th Anniversary – 1996 graded CGC 9.5.

Meanwhile, hundreds of CGC-certified sports cards sold through PWCC in November as well, including the most sought-after card of New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio's MLB career. A 1941 Play Ball #71 Joe DiMaggio graded CGC 2.5 sold for $1,590 on November 6. Although not Joltin' Joe's rookie issue, this is considered DiMaggio's most popular and coveted card. The artistic rendering of the nine-time World Series champion at bat features his famous swing on full display, making it arguably the most attractive DiMaggio card in the hobby. In addition, the card was released during the 1941 season, which he finished with a .357 batting average, 30 home runs and a league-leading 125 RBIs, earning DiMaggio his second of three AL MVPs from his iconic career in New York.

One of the other sports card highlights from November's PWCC sales was an extremely rare, one-of-one signed card from the earliest years of Detroit Pistons star Grant Hill's NBA career. A 1998-99 Metal Universe Linchpins #4LP Grant Hill - #'d/1 graded CGC 8.5 with an autograph graded CGC 9 sold for $1,560 on November 20. Plagued by injuries during his NBA career, Hill is one of the greatest what-if stories in sports history. As a standout two-time NCAA champion at Duke University, 1995 NBA Co-Rookie of the Year and a seven-time NBA All-Star, he still has a huge fanbase that covets his sports cards, especially an autographed example that is limited to only one ever made, like this one.

Notable Upcoming PWCC Sales

PWCC Marketplace continues to offer CGC-certified cards in their weekly, fixed and premium auction formats. One of the highlights available in December is an Illusion’s Zorua, Pokémon (2010) Japanese LEGEND Promos – L-P Illustrator Sakaga – Pokémon Fan graded CGC Gem Mint 10. To celebrate the theatrical release of Zoroark: Ruler of Illusions in Japan, The Pokémon Company invited Japanese children to participate in a Pokémon card design contest with templates that featured Zorua and Zoroark. This card features one of the ten winning illustrations, printed on a mere 200 cards. In addition, there are thousands of other CGC-certified cards being offered through PWCC’s platform in December.

Sell Your CGC-certified Cards on PWCC Marketplace!

PWCC Marketplace and CGC Cards have created a streamlined pathway to grading and selling through an operational partnership between the two companies. The grading and selling program is accessed via an online submission process on the PWCC website, and everything is managed through the PWCC Vault.

Cards sent to CGC receive priority grading and encapsulation through its third-party grading service for sports cards. Graded cards are returned to PWCC and immediately added to PWCC’s Auction Builder Curation Algorithm process, which optimizes cards for sale in upcoming PWCC Weekly Sunday Auctions.

For more information about this program, click here.

Prices realized include buyer’s premium.

Note: At the time some of these cards were graded, they were encapsulated with the original CGC Cards label. Starting July 11, 2023, CGC Cards began encapsulating cards with the new CGC Cards label. In addition to the new label, collectors enjoy many other benefits with CGC Cards, such as the ability to submit without purchasing a membership and an industry-standard Gem Mint 10 grading Scale.
