Dozens of CGC-certified Vintage Baseball Cards Featured in Hake's Auctions Sale
Posted on 1/10/2024
More than 250 sports cards that are authenticated and graded by CGC Cards™ are available in an upcoming Hake's Auctions sale. Vintage baseball and basketball cards are up for grabs, with a primary focus being pre-war baseball cards. Online bidding is already underway for the Hake's January Auction - Session 1, which will be held January 15, 2024.
The top lot for sports cards in the auction comes from the iconic T206 set: a 1909-11 T206 Rube Waddell - Throwing graded CGC 4.5 (lot 703) with an estimate of $700 to $1,000. The legendary tobacco card set featured several MLB Hall of Famers and includes many of the most expensive baseball cards ever sold, such as Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Christy Mathewson and the famous Honus Wagner card that was once the most expensive sports collectible in the world. The Hall of Fame list also includes Rube Waddell, who was arguably the biggest draw in the game for a time due to his fan-favorite personality and being baseball's premier power pitcher during the first decade of the 20th century.
Another highlight of the auction is an 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Charles W. Bennett graded CGC Authentic (lot 646), which has an estimate of $400 to $700. N28 Allen & Ginter is one of the all-time classic sports card sets from the historic cigarette brand that added the cards in their products in the late 1800s. In addition, Topps has re-created the retro-style A&G cards in newer sets since 2006, utilizing modern MLB players. Of the 50-card set, 10 featured baseball players, including 15-year veteran Charles W. Bennett. The longtime catcher played the majority of his career with the Detroit Wolverines and Boston Beaneaters, winning four pennants between the two teams.
