Corporate History Pokémon Cards Continue to Impress in PWCC Auctions
Posted on 2/7/2024
Two more CGC-certified Creatures Deck: Corporate History Pokémon cards each realized more than $20,000 in a January PWCC auction. These were just a few of the thousands of CGC-certified TCGs, sports cards and non-sports cards that were graded through the partnership between CGC Cards™ and PWCC Marketplace and then sold in January and February 2024.
The Chansey, Pokémon (2021) Japanese Creatures Deck: Corp. History 25th Anniversary – 1995 graded CGC 9.5 realized $24,000 on January 28. It is the only example graded CGC 9.5 in the CGC Cards Population Report, with 10 graded higher. This Chansey is a special reprint of a sketch card that was used to test the Pokémon TCG during development. The sketch of Chansey was illustrated by Kouichi Ooyama, one of the original TCG designers. The back of the card describes Creatures Inc.’s founding story.
In addition, a Charizard, Pokémon (2021) Japanese Creatures Deck: Corp. History 25th Anniversary – 1996 graded CGC 9.5 also realized $24,000 on January 28. Charizard is one of the most iconic cards in the Pokémon TCG, and it was very popular in early tournaments because it was one of the only evolved Pokémon available to use in decks. The back of the card describes Kouichi Ooyama and Akihiko Miura’s role in the franchise’s development.
Meanwhile, hundreds of CGC-certified sports cards sold through PWCC in January as well, with a highlight of the sales being an autographed card from MLB legend Willie Mays. A 2001 Topps Heritage Autographs #THA-WM Willie Mays graded CGC 9, with an autograph graded CGC 9, sold for $960 on January 21. The iconic center fielder who played primarily for the New York/San Francisco Giants is widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever in MLB history. He is a 24-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove Award winner, two-time NL MVP and 1954 World Series champion. Mays was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015; the MLB renamed the World Series MVP Award the Willie Mays World Series MVP Award in 2017.
Another sports card highlight from January's PWCC sales was a parallel of a popular Donruss Optic Patrick Mahomes rookie card. A 2017 Donruss Optic #177 Patrick Mahomes II - Red & Yellow graded CGC 9.5 sold for $930 on January 28. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has once again helped lead his team back to another Super Bowl this season, with a chance to win his third Lombardi Trophy in his first seven seasons in the NFL. With six Pro Bowls, two NFL MVPs and two Super Bowl MVPs to his name this early in his career, Mahomes is setting himself up to be part of the GOAT conversation by the time he retires, which could be years away since he's still only 28 years old.

Notable Upcoming PWCC Sales
PWCC Marketplace continues to offer CGC-certified cards in their weekly, fixed and premium auction formats. One of the highlights available in February is a Deoxys ex [Attack], Pokémon (2005) EX Deoxys Holo graded CGC Gem Mint 10. Deoxys has four forms (Normal, Attack, Defense and Speed) and three of them were available as ex cards in the EX Deoxys set from 2005. Unfortunately, Pokémon’s popularity had declined in the mid-2000s, so the set was short printed. Rares, including ex and Gold Star cards from this set, are very scarce for this reason. In addition, there are thousands of other CGC-certified cards being offered through PWCC’s platform in February.
Other TCG and non-sports cards in the upcoming February auctions include:
- a Monkey D. Luffy, One Piece (2023) Awakening of the New Era – OP05-119 Secret Rare – Alternate Art Parallel graded CGC Pristine 10

Sell Your CGC-certified Cards on PWCC Marketplace!
PWCC Marketplace and CGC Cards have created a streamlined pathway to grading and selling through an operational partnership between the two companies. The grading and selling program is accessed via an online submission process on the PWCC website, and everything is managed through the PWCC Vault.
Cards sent to CGC receive priority grading and encapsulation through its third-party grading service for sports cards. Graded cards are returned to PWCC and immediately added to PWCC’s Auction Builder Curation Algorithm process, which optimizes cards for sale in upcoming PWCC Weekly Sunday Auctions.

Prices realized include buyer’s premium.
Note: At the time some of these cards were graded, they were encapsulated with the original CGC Cards label. Starting July 11, 2023, CGC Cards began encapsulating cards with the new CGC Cards label. In addition to the new label, collectors enjoy many other benefits with CGC Cards, such as the ability to submit without purchasing a membership and an industry-standard Gem Mint 10 grading scale.
