CGC Cards Grades Rare Autographed Relic Card Featuring a Trio of Atlanta Braves Greats

Posted on 2/26/2024

Three generations of stars come together on one rarity that includes each player's game-used relic and signature.

CGC Cards™ recently received a special submission of an extremely rare card that features game-used relics and autographs from three Atlanta Braves icons of the past and present: Dale Murphy, Chipper Jones and Ronald Acuña Jr. It showcases arguably the most popular Braves player of the 1980s in Murphy, the 1990s and 2000s in Jones and Atlanta's current superstar and one of the faces of the MLB in Acuña.

The recently submitted 2021 Topps Sterling Triple Autograph Relics #STAR-MJA Murphy/Jones/Acuña Jr. received a grade of CGC 9.5, with the autographs graded CGC 9. Due to a short print run of only five ever created, this stellar example of a relic auto card would be coveted by any serious MLB collector.

The Topps Sterling series is a high-end MLB offering that is made up of various low-numbered autographs, relics and autograph relics. With only one pack per box, and only two cards per pack, the Sterling series provides some of the rarest and most high-quality hits in the hobby today. There are 10 different cards, each featuring three players from the same team in the Triple Autograph Relics checklist from 2021. The base version is serial numbered to 10 copies of each card, but there is also a Silver parallel that is a highly sought-after 1-of-1 and a Red parallel numbered to only 5 like this Atlanta Braves example.

This attractive card features a horizontal design with headshots of each Atlanta player beside their respective game-used relic. The card includes a piece of Murphy's bat and of Jones and Acuña's jerseys. Each relic is presented in an elegant silver frame with a partially filigreed border. To top it all off, each player added their hand-signed autograph in blue ink, making this rarity an exciting and highly sought-after card.

Dale Murphy

During his 18-year MLB career, including 15 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, outfielder Dale Murphy was one of the most consistent players of his generation. During the decade of the 1980s, he led the National League in games played, at bats, runs, hits, extra base hits, RBIs, runs created and total bases. Murphy's 308 home runs in the '80s were only second to Philadelphia Phillies icon Mike Schmidt during the 10-year span. Throughout his career, he earned two NL MVP Awards in consecutive years, the Silver Slugger Award in four straight years and the Gold Glove Award in five straight years. The Braves retired Murphy's No. 3 jersey number in 1994.

Chipper Jones

Larry "Chipper" Jones is a Hall of Fame third baseman who is widely accepted as one of the best to ever play his position. The longtime Braves infielder spent his entire 19-year MLB career in Atlanta, racking up a .303 career batting average, 468 home runs and 1,623 RBIs as one the greatest switch-hitters in baseball history. Jones leads the MLB in most career RBIs for a third baseman. He is the only switch-hitter to hit more than 400 home runs and have a career batting average of at least .300, while ranking second in career RBIs as a switch-hitter. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 1990 MLB Draft is an eight-time All-Star, NL MVP Award winner, two-time NL Silver Slugger Award winner and 1995 World Series champion. After he finished his career in 2012, the Braves retired Jones' No. 10 jersey number and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Ronald Acuña Jr.

Ronald Acuña Jr. is currently one of the most exciting young players in the MLB and is the reigning NL MVP after becoming the first player to ever have a 40-70 season (40+ home runs, 70+ stolen bases) in the history of the game. The 26-year-old star outfielder from Venezuela is a rare five-tool player who excels at the plate, on the bases and in the outfield. Since his 2018 pro debut, he's already won almost every award possible, including NL Rookie of the Year, NL MVP, three Silver Slugger Awards, an NL Hank Aaron Award and more. The four-time All-Star also won a World Series ring with Atlanta in 2021 despite having his season cut short by a leg injury. Already an Atlanta Braves icon and one of the faces of the MLB, Acuña is on a path to the Hall of Fame if he continues his elite play.
