CGC-certified Baltimore News Orioles Card Realizes More than $28,000 in Hake's Auction
Posted on 3/22/2024
An extremely rare vintage baseball card that is certified by CGC Cards™ led all card lots in a recent Hake's Auctions sale, realizing five figures and outperforming its pre-auction estimate by thousands of dollars. The pre-war baseball card was the highlight of a wide-ranging selection of sports cards and pop culture trading cards that were available in Hake's Auction 240, which was held on March 19-20, 2024.
The top lot in the auctions was a 1910 Baltimore News Orioles Jack Dunn graded CGC 1 (Session 1, lot 578), which realized $28,556, exceeding its pre-auction estimate of $10,000 to $20,000. The card is the most important of the set, depicting manager Jack Dunn, who famously discovered arguably the most iconic baseball player ever — George Herman "Babe" Ruth. The rarity of the card cannot be overstated since this is the first known public sale of any 1910 Dunn card, and it sits alone as the only example in the CGC Cards Population Report.
Meanwhile, the top non-sports card lot in the auction was a Complete Set of 1985 Garbage Pail Kids Series 1 graded CGC 4 to CGC Pristine 10 (Session 2, lot 1919), which realized $6,202. The set featured inappropriate spoofs of the popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls during the 1980s. The Garbage Pail Kids series became somewhat controversial upon their release, with schools across the nation banning children from having them. The crude series of sticker cards featured an 88-card set (44 A cards and 44 B cards) and finding a high-grade complete set like this one is a rarity.
