CGC-certified TCGs and Sports Cards Continue to Impress in June PWCC Auctions
Posted on 7/11/2024
An early Magic: The Gathering card certified by CGC Cards™ realized over $15,000 after spirited bidding concluded in a June PWCC auction. The rarity was just one of the thousands of CGC-certified TCGs, sports cards and non-sports cards that were sold through PWCC Marketplace recently.
The Ancestral Recall, Magic: The Gathering (1993) Limited Edition Alpha graded CGC 9.5 realized $15,600 on June 30, 2024, becoming the highest CGC-certified example of Ancestral Recall to sell on PWCC’s auction platform. One of the famous Power Nine, Ancestral Recall was known for its ability to either allow the player to draw three cards, giving them a deck advantage, or forcing the opponent to draw three cards, moving them slowly (but surely) towards running out of cards in their deck. Like the rest of the Power Nine, Ancestral Recall was deemed too strong for gameplay and banned from most playable formats.
Meanwhile, hundreds of CGC-certified sports cards sold through PWCC in June as well, with the top highlight being an autographed card showcasing two of the greatest big men to ever play in the NBA. A 2004-05 Topps Finest Perfect Pairs Autographs #PP-DP Robert Parish/Tim Duncan graded CGC 8, with autographs graded CGC 10 sold for $750 on June 16. Parish anchored the center position for the Boston Celtics during the 1980s and early 1990s, helping the franchise win three of their record 18 NBA titles. In addition, Duncan is arguably the greatest power forward in the history of the league. He was a cornerstone of the Spurs dynasty that won five championships in 15 years, from 1999 to 2014. Combining the pair's signatures on a single card makes this rarity a unique and extremely desirable collectible.
Another sports highlight from June's PWCC sales was a rookie card of Japanese baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani. A 2018 Topps Chrome #150 Shohei Ohtani - Purple Refractor graded CGC 9 sold for $576 on June 9. Ohtani traded in his red Angels uniform for Dodgers blue this past offseason. Although part of a new team and new league now, he has been just as dominant, picking up where he left off during his 2023 AL MVP campaign. If Ohtani's MLB career stats continue at this pace, he'll go down in history as one of the greatest to ever play the game, which means rookie cards like this one should continue to trend upward in value over time.

Sell Your CGC-certified Cards on PWCC Marketplace!
PWCC Marketplace and CGC Cards have created a streamlined pathway to grading and selling through an operational partnership between the two companies. The grading and selling program is accessed via an online submission process on the PWCC website, and everything is managed through the PWCC Vault.
Cards sent to CGC receive priority grading and encapsulation through its third-party grading service for sports cards. Graded cards are returned to PWCC and immediately added to PWCC’s Auction Builder Curation Algorithm process, which optimizes cards for sale in upcoming PWCC Weekly Sunday Auctions.

Prices realized include buyer’s premium.
Note: At the time some of these cards were graded, they were encapsulated with the original CGC Cards label. Starting July 11, 2023, CGC Cards began encapsulating cards with the new CGC Cards label. In addition to the new label, collectors enjoy many other benefits with CGC Cards, such as the ability to submit without purchasing a membership and an industry-standard Gem Mint 10 grading scale.
