CGC Cards is thrilled to announce that it will now recognize all Neo Revelation "Double" Holo variants on the CGC Cards label. CGC Cards is proud to be the first card grading service to recognize all 16 of these distinct variants.
In order to maintain the integrity of the CGC Cards Population Report, CGC Cards' grading team used the verification images taken of every previously-certified Neo Revelation holo to update each card's certification, reflecting their proper variants. Please check your card's certification number here to see if your card is now recognized as a "Double" Holo variant. Any previously certified Neo Revelation holo cards may be resubmitted under CGC Cards' ReHolder service to have the variant added to the label for just $5. Learn how to submit here.
If you believe you have a "Double" Holo variant card that was mistakenly not updated in the Verify Certification tool, please email your card's CGC Cards certification number, along with photos of the front of your card, to [email protected] for a free analysis and review by our expert graders.
What is a "Double" Holo variant?
After the initial release of Neo Revelation in 2001, Wizards of the Coast modified the white opaque layers in the printing files for the cards. The white opaque layer is the first layer put on top of the holofoil in order to block the foil from bleeding through in specific areas. This change to the opaque layers resulted in differences between the appearances of each card. While some are minor, many are easy to notice, like the two pictured above. The reason for WotC's change to the opaque layers is unknown, but it is clear that these "Double" Holo variants are much rarer than normal holofoils, and often bring large premiums in the marketplace.
To make it easier to identify these variants, CGC Cards' photography team has taken high-resolution photos of each card in both its normal and "Double" Holo variant type. These are listed below in numerical order based on card number, along with tips on how to tell the difference between each card.
1/64 - Ampharos
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around Ampharos, with the change particularly noticeable behind the head. Additionally, the yellow border around Ampharos's mouth is much thinner on the "Double" holo variant.
2/64 - Blissey
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around Blissey. The bottom of Blissey's right arm (viewer's left) has a triangular holo area where the opaque layer is missing.
3/64 - Celebi
The "Double" Holo variant's background is all holo, including the area between Celebi's eyes and antenna. Additionally, the white border around Celebi is holographic.
4/64 - Crobat
The "Double" Holo variant's background is all holo, including a portion of the moon. Crobat's eyes are holo as well.
5/64 - Delibird
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around Delibird, with the change particularly noticeable on the top of Delibird's head. The white border will also be missing from around the edges of trees and the top of the grass.
6/64 - Entei
The "Double" Holo variant has no white border around Entei, which is particularly noticeable around its spiky plates. Additionally, the variant also has the holofoil bleeding into the spikes of fur on the right side of Entei's head.
7/64 - Ho-Oh
Ho-Oh's wings and eyes will be holographic in the "Double" Holo variant. This is undoubtedly the easiest of the variants to identify, as the difference between the two is obvious.
8/64 - Houndoom
The "Double" Holo variant's background will be holo, and there will be no white border around Houndoom. The area between Houndoom's legs will also be holo.
9/64 - Jumpluff
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around the snowman in the background, which is most noticeable around the snowman's head. Additionally, the area between the right Jumpluff's right two cotton puffs will be holo.
10/64 - Magneton
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around the center of Magneton. Additionally, many of the red and blue tips of the magnets appear much smaller than normal.
11/64 - Misdreavus
In the "Double" Holo variant, Misdreavus's eyes are holo. The white border around the Pokémon is also missing.
12/64 - Porygon2
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around Porygon2. This change is particularly noticeable on the backside of the Pokémon.
13/64 - Raikou
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around Raikou's body, particularly noticeable around the Pokémon's head. In addition, part of its fangs and left muzzle spike are holo.
14/64 - Suicune
The "Double" Holo variant will have no white border around Suicune's body, which is most visible around it's purple mane. Additionally, a portion of the bottom of its ribbon-like tails are holo, making them appear thinner.
65/64 - Shining Gyarados
The "Double" Holo variant's background is holo, making it much more difficult to see the clouds and white caps on the waves.
66/64 - Shining Magikarp
The "Double" Holo variant's background is holo, making it hard to see the other Magikarp in the background. Additionally, the white border around the shiny Magikarp is holo and difficult to see.
