The Story Behind the Cards: Star Wars Unlimited
Posted on 9/12/2024
Star Wars is one of the most beloved pop culture franchises in the world. What started with the 1977 film has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, including movies, television series, video games, comic books, novels and, of course, trading cards.
The Star Wars franchise has inspired several TCGs over the years, including the Star Wars CCG by Decipher and Star Wars: The Trading Card Game by Wizards of the Coast. Now, the mantle has been taken up by Fantasy Flight Games, who have shaken up the formula of a typical TCG with their newest take on a Star Wars card game — Star Wars: Unlimited.
What is Star Wars: Unlimited?
Star Wars: Unlimited is a fast-paced and immersive TCG that has players face off in head-to-head battles using their favorite characters, settings and abilities from the Star Wars universe. Each player takes the role of a leader — usually an iconic Star Wars character, such as Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker — and builds an army to take down their opponent’s base while defending their own.
Boasting more than 250 cards per expansion, multiple play formats and a strong Organized Play structure, Star Wars: Unlimited aims to be a TCG that anyone can enjoy, whether they play competitively or casually, or simply want to collect the cards. Additionally, Star Wars: Unlimited offers an online player portal where fans can track their card collection and share with others in the community.
How to Play
Each player creates a deck of 50 cards, including a Base, a Leader and several Token cards. After separating those cards from the rest of the deck and reshuffling, each player draws six cards to form a hand. Then two cards are placed facedown near the base to serve as resources.
Gameplay is split into two phases: the action phase and the regroup phase. Most of a player’s turn takes place during the action phase. Players have several actions available during this phase, including playing a card, attacking with units, using action abilities, taking an initiative or passing to the next phase.
During the action phase, players can choose to attack with the units they control on the board. Their units can either attack the opponent’s base directly or attack the opponent’s units to dwindle their ranks. Whichever player can bring their opponent’s base down to 0 HP first is the winner! Players can also use their action phase to use an action ability or pass their turn to the opponent. During the regroup phase, both players reset any units that were exhausted during the last turn, draw two cards and ready for their next turn.
