CGC Cards Certifies More Promos from Cancelled 2011 Pokémon TCG Tournament Circuit

Posted on 11/7/2024

The two Victory Cup promo cards would have been awarded to the finalists of the 2011 Pokémon World Championships if the tournament hadn't been cancelled.

In November 2023, CGC Cards™ had the honor of certifying a rare group of Japanese Pokémon World Championships 2011 promos that were never formally released to the public due to the Japanese Qualifiers being cancelled. Now, CGC Cards has graded another set of promos from the cancelled 2011 circuit: two Victory Cup promos that would have been awarded to the finalists of the national World Championship event.

The Pokémon World Championships is an annual event that invites the best Pokémon TCG, video game and mobile players from around the world to compete against each other for the title of Pokémon Master. Finalists of each category walk away with cash prizes and promotional gifts, including commemorative cards that act as event memorabilia and an invitation to the next year’s World Championship event.

In 2011, the top three winners of the Pokémon TCG world championship tournament would have received a Victory Cup card marked with their placement number, their name and invitational instructions for the 2012 tournament circuit. Unfortunately, because of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that ravaged East Japan in 2011, many events — including many regional and international tournaments for the 2011 Pokémon TCG tournament circuit — were postponed or outright cancelled.

As a result, the 2011 Pokémon World Championships were also cancelled, and these Victory Cup promos went unused and undistributed. They were submitted to CGC Cards for certification and encapsulation more than a decade after they were supposed to be released.

The Victory Cup, Pokémon (2011) Japanese Black & White World Championship Promo cards received grades of CGC Gem Mint 10 and CGC Pristine 10. These grades are a testament to how well these cards were preserved for more than a decade, until they were sent in for grading and encapsulation.
