Posted on 11/20/2024
CGC Cards™ is thrilled to announce that the Signature Series team will be hosting an exclusive In-House Private Signing event with Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding! The duo are best known for their work on the iconic series The Death of Superman for DC Comics.
For this signing, submitters can also send in comic books, which CGC Comics will encapsulate with our distinctive yellow CGC Signature Series Label. (For instructions on how to submit comic books for this signing, click here.)
Dan Jurgens began his comics career in 1981 as an artist on DC Comics’ The Warlord. He then created, wrote, and drew Booster Gold and added Flash Gordon, Legion of Super-Heroes, Green Arrow and Justice League America to his résumé. Most notably, he logged a very long run as writer/artist on Superman, including the best-selling Death of Superman, for which he won the National Cartoonists Society Award. Jurgens followed up with the mega-hit crossover Zero Hour, which redefined the DC Universe.
At Marvel Comics, he wrote and drew The Sensational Spider-Man, The Mighty Thor and Captain America.
Jurgens then returned to DC Comics to write and draw Green Arrow, Justice League International, Firestorm and more. He then revived the true Superman in the Superman: Lois and Clark series, which featured the creation and establishment of Superman’s son, Jonathan Kent, as a major DC character. After that, Dan had long stints writing Action Comics, which debuted in 1938, starring Superman. He continued that all the way through the landmark Action Comics #1000. He also wrote Batman Beyond, Nightwing and Titans Giant, which was exclusive to Walmart stores.
After that, Dan wrote Generations Shattered and Generations Forged, which structured the Linearverse for DC. He also drew a number of covers for Marvel Comics, featuring characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine, the X-Men and Avengers.
2022 saw Dan return to his favorite creation, Booster Gold, as he wrote the DC mini-series Blue and Gold, starring Booster and the Blue Beetle in a project that evoked the best of “buddy cops” style movies. That year also happened to be the 30th anniversary of the Death of Superman and Dan wrote and drew a 40-page story celebrating the event in The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special. Dan also returned to Thor, a character he wrote for seven years, with a story he wrote and drew for Thor #750, which celebrated the thunder god’s 60th anniversary.
These days, Dan has returned to Action Comics where he’s writing a feature starring Superman, Lois and young Jon Kent, telling the untold stories of how DC’s preeminent super couple raised their young son to be the hero he is. Dan is also writing the adventures of another iconic character, Tarzan, in Dynamite Comics’ Lord of the Jungle series. Dan is also hard at work on projects that will hit the stands in 2024. Stay tuned for some special announcements!
Three months after graduating high school, Breeding realized his childhood dream by entering into a career illustrating comic books. He got his start in September 1979 assisting comic book inker Bob Layton as a background artist on his definitive first run on Iron Man, with writer David Michelinie and penciller John Romita Jr., for Marvel Comics.
He has been fortunate throughout his career to have collaborated with some of the best artists and writers in the comic book industry and has worked on many popular titles for both Marvel and DC Comics. His work on the Superman titles, notably the Death of Superman storyline, is among his most recognized, along with Spider-Man, Thor, The Avengers, and West Coast Avengers. Breeding takes pride in having a versatile career, working primarily as a finish inker, but on occasion provided pencil art, traditional and computer coloring, story development, and plotting.
