Autographed 1910 Harry Hooper Card Certified by CGC x JSA Offered in Hake's Auction
Posted on 7/15/2025
A rare, autographed card from the coveted 1910 E91-C American Caramel set that was certified and graded by CGC x JSA is among a selection of vintage baseball cards and memorabilia being offered in an upcoming Hake's auction. Online bidding is already underway for Hake's Auction #244, which concludes on July 29-30, 2025.
One of the top CGC-certified sports cards in the sale is a 1910 E91-C American Caramel Harry Hooper graded CGC 1.5, with an autograph graded JSA 9 (lot 592), which has an estimate of $1,000 to $2,000. Inserted into caramel candies in the early 1900s, the E91-C set featured a checklist of several Major League Baseball Hall of Famers, including Boston Red Sox outfielder Harry Hooper. Adding to the vintage card's rarity, this particular 1910 E91-C card is also autographed by Hooper and authenticated by JSA experts, making this only the second card of its kind in the CGC Cards Population Report and the only autographed example.
A unique outfielder who threw right-handed and batted left-handed, Hooper spent more than a decade of his pro career in Boston before joining the Chicago White Sox for his final few playing years. The California native was revered for his defense and is still the all-time career leader in assists and double plays by a right fielder. While with the Red Sox, Hooper was part of one of the best outfield trios ever assembled alongside Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis, who became known as the Golden Outfield. He also helped Boston win four World Series titles in the 1910s and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971.
The E91-C set released in 1910 was the third series of a three-set run, which began with the E91-A set in 1908, followed by the E91-B set in 1909. Each of the three sets consisted of a 33-card checklist, with the first two sets featuring players from Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, and the E91-C set featuring players from Boston, Pittsburgh and Washington. Some of the Hall of Fame highlights of the E91-C set include Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker and Hooper.
Each of the three sets were released by the American Caramel Company and mirrored the same dimensions of other sports cards of the era, which measured about 2-3/4 inches by 1-1/2 inches. The cards in caramel candies offered an alternative to young baseball fans who weren't old enough to buy cards that were inserted into tobacco products, like the popular T206 cards that were released from 1909 to 1911. 1910 E91-C cards are already scarce, but it is even rarer to see autographed versions of these coveted Pre-war cards, like this particular Hooper example offered by Hake's Auctions.
