Hake's Offers Full Set of World Wide Gum Sea Raiders Certified by CGC
Posted on 7/25/2025
A very rare set of World Wide Gum Sea Raiders cards certified by CGC is causing a stir in an ongoing Hake’s sale. The 24-card set is just one of the CGC-certified lots being offered in Hake’s Auction #244, Session 2, which is set to end on July 30, 2025.
The top card lot in the sale is an entire Copyright File Copy of the 1933 World Wide Gum Sea Raiders Montreal non-sports card set (lot 1530). Each card has been certified by CGC, with nine cards graded CGC 1 through CGC 5, and the others graded CGC AU. The set is pedigreed to the John Grossman Collection.
The World Wide Gum Sea Raiders collectible card set was produced in 1933 by World Wide Gum. Each card features artwork of famous pirates, their ships and common pirate themes and settings. Interestingly, although each card is noted to be “one of a series of 192,” only 24 cards were released in the US. Many of these World Wide Gum Sea Raiders cards are highly coveted by collectors and command a premium at auction. The CGC-certified set has an estimate of $10,000 to $20,000, according to Hake’s.
Since these cards were set aside as a Copyright File Copy set, they were not sold in stores. Of the two sets that were sent to the US Patent Office for review, this one was returned to World Wide Gum after being greenlit for release, while the other was held by the federal government, according to background information provided to the auction house.
Other CGC-certified cards in the sale include:
- a lot of 14 1938 Gum Inc. Horrors of War Promotional Stamp and Overprint Cards, each graded CGC 1 through CGC 4.5 (lot 1537)
- a Smashing the Gangsters, Superman (1940) Leader Novelty Candy Co. #2 graded CGC 1 (lot 1538)
- a Peril in the Air, Superman (1940) Leader Novelty Candy Co. #12 graded CGC AU (lot 1539)
- a The Trap, Superman (1940) Leader Novelty Candy Co. #16 graded CGC 1.5 (lot 1540)
- a complete set of 1956 Disney Davy Crockett, Topps (1956) 1st Series graded CGC 2 through CGC 7 and pedigreed to the John Grossman Collection (lot 1545)
- a complete set of 1956 Disney Davy Crockett, Topps (1956) 2nd Series graded CGC 2 through CGC 7 (as well as one graded CGC Authentic Altered and one graded CGC AU), and pedigreed to the John Grossman Collection (lot 1546)
