An iconic vintage rookie card of a baseball legend recently passed through the CGC grading room.

Vintage sports card collectors continue to entrust their most prized collectibles to CGC® for authentication and grading. Recently, a submission passed through the grading room that included one of the most coveted rookie cards of the mid-20th century. A collector submitted a 1949 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige rookie card that earned a grade of CGC 3. High-grade copies are valued in the six figures, and even copies in this condition are easily worth five figures.

The iconic 1949 Leaf #8 is not only one of just a few cards produced during Paige's short-lived Major League Baseball career, but it is also widely considered his first official card. The card is a cornerstone of any Paige card collection, dated to his first two years in the majors with the Cleveland Indians, whom he joined in 1948. In fact, this classic is one of only three mainstream cards that were released during his time in the MLB, because Paige spent the majority of his career as a superstar in the Negro Leagues.

One of the most important vintage sets in the hobby, the historic 1949 baseball set produced by Chicago's Leaf Gum Company was the first post-World War II sports card set to feature color images. Because of wartime restrictions on cardboard, ink and other supplies, card sets were seldom produced in the years prior. With cards measuring 2-3/8" by 2-7/8", the set's design featured each player image against a colorful background.

1949 Leaf's basic design also featured the player's name below their image in a vibrant text box, giving the set a simple but distinctive look that stood out. In addition, the back of the 1949 Leaf set includes player specifications, a short biography and an advertisement for All-Star Baseball Gum, which was typical for the era.

Interestingly enough, the 1949 Leaf set includes cards with copyrighted dates of both 1948 and 1949, with some in the hobby considering this a two-year set. Another quirky aspect of the set is that it is skip-numbered from #1 to #168, with the checklist confirmed to be only a 98-card set. Half of the cards in the set are also considered short prints (including the #8 Satchel Paige), making this vintage set even more difficult to complete and even more valuable.

The 1949 Leaf set is also revered by the hobby because of its stacked checklist of Hall of Famers, which includes some of the most sought-after cards of their day. The set is highlighted by iconic players like #1 Joe DiMaggio, #3 Babe Ruth, #4 Stan Musial, #32 Warren Spahn, #76 Ted Williams and more. Some of the most important rookie cards in the sport are also part of the checklist, including legendary rookie cards like #79 Jackie Robinson and the #8 Satchel Paige.

By the time Paige finally debuted in the MLB in 1948, he was already 42 years old. He was a star pitcher for more than two decades before baseball became integrated after Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The change allowed several elite Black players to sign with MLB clubs in the coming years, finally showcasing their talent on baseball's biggest stage.

To this day, Paige is the oldest player to debut in the MLB, and he still holds the record for the oldest active player to play in a game. Paige was 59 years old when he pitched his last MLB game for the Kansas City Athletics. Additionally, he became the first pitcher from the Negro Leagues to pitch in the World Series. In only a handful of MLB seasons played during his legendary baseball career, Paige became a World Series champion and a two-time MLB All-Star.
