Counterfeit Card Alert: 2024-25 Panini Noir Metal Frame #203 LeBron James - FOTL Holo Gold
Posted on 4/9/2026
NBA superstar LeBron James needs no introduction. He has been a staple of pro basketball for almost a quarter of a century, starting his career as an 18-year-old phenom out of Akron, Ohio. Through the years, James has curated arguably the most impressive individual career of all time, winning every award imaginable and breaking numerous records along the way.
As a four-time NBA champion, four-time NBA MVP, 22-time All-Star and the record holder for most points and most games played in NBA history (among a laundry list of other accolades), James' longevity and career accomplishments are unmatched in the modern game. He is, at a minimum, on the short list of candidates for the NBA's greatest player of all time, and a strong case can be made for James as the league's GOAT.

Players of James' caliber are also some of the most collected athletes of their time. In this particular case, some sports fans have been collecting items tied to his basketball career since James was in high school. Unfortunately, some of the 41-year-old's collectibles are susceptible to counterfeits because of their value.
James has a huge fanbase that includes devout collectors vying for his rarest cards. This has also made many of his collectibles targets for counterfeiters, as they attempt to profit off fake versions of cards like the 2024-25 Panini Noir Metal Frame #203 LeBron James - FOTL Holo Gold, which is serial-numbered to only eight copies ever made and is worth at least a few thousand dollars in high grades.

The purported rarity is one of several high-quality, ultra-modern counterfeits that were created in China. CGC grading experts have seen an influx of such counterfeits recently, but there are plenty of signs to look for when identifying fake copies, especially when comparing one to an authentic example like the one above.

Focusing on the front of the card, the saturation is off. Upon closer inspection, colors across the card do not match, including the natural skin tone of players. A noticeable difference is seen in James' skin color, jersey color and even the shade of orange on the basketball.

In addition, all text features foil lettering that pairs perfectly with the card's gold-colored metal frame on an authentic copy. When zooming in on the "NOIR" logo at the top, the "City Edition" at the bottom, James' name on the left and the team name on the right, the foil is not quite as sharp on the counterfeits.

The foil is a little "choppier" in appearance, with less definition in certain letters in his name and team name. The lines and corners of letters lack an authentic copy's precision, making even a high-quality counterfeit stand out.

Turning our attention to the back side of the cards, even more red flags appear. All coloring from the metal frame to the logos to the white line design to the lettering is all too bright when compared to an authentic copy, which has richer, more robust coloring.

Zooming in on the logos on the back of the card reveals further discrepancies. For example, the details of the "NOIR 10 Years" logo are not as clean and don't line up as well on the counterfeit copy. It is clearly visible that the black and white sections of the "10" do not line up perfectly like they do on the authentic version. Also, the NBA logo looks muddied and the copyright text at the bottom of the card is extremely hazy, with no crisp letters or numbers to be seen.

The other logos on the back show more of the same. The Panini logo has several problems: color issues, a muddied image, less defined letters, muddied borders and an overall sloppier appearance. The NBA Players Association logo shows many of the same issues.
These notable red flags on the front and back of the counterfeit 2024-25 Panini Noir Metal Frame #203 LeBron James - FOTL Holo Gold helped CGC experts determine that it is not an authentic example. Education is the most important tool when collecting cards. The more collectors know about the printing and manufacturing process of cards, the fewer mistakes will be made when buying cards. This example also highlights the importance of certification for any high-value card.
