CGC Trading Cards Authenticates Trio of Awesome Pokémon Rarities

CGC® Trading Cards has authenticated and graded a trio of extremely rare Pokémon trophy cards. The three cards, which were awarded in Japan between 1998 and 2002, are among the most coveted cards in all of Pokémon. In fact, a card from the trio is the only one of its kind ever awarded!

The earliest card of the three, the above 1998 Kangaskhan Prize Card was awarded during the Garura Parent/Child Mega Battle tournament, which was held in May 1998. Only Parent/Child teams who reached a certain number of wins were awarded this special card, which makes it is particularly rare and desirable.

The next card is by far the rarest of the three, as it is the only example made. It was awarded in 2001 to Takahiro Ikeda, who is actually featured on the card itself! Very few Pokémon trophy cards have featured winners in the artwork; only about 20 examples were issued with the winners’ likenesses featured on them. This was done from 2000 to 2002 for a few select tournaments. Additionally, only three cards with Ho-oh art were ever made, making it all the more special. CGC placed the winner’s name on the label because he is featured in the art.

Last but certainly not least, we have a Number 1 Trainer from 2002. This card was awarded to Kento Nakayama, who came in first place in the Chūbu region of the Spring Battle Road tournament. The card features iconic artwork by Ken Sugimori, which was carried over from earlier “old back” Japanese trophy cards and comprises popular Pokémon, including Pikachu, Growlithe, Chansey, Voltorb, Marill and Doduo.
