What makes it special? Charizard is one of the most popular Pokémon in the franchise, with older and newer cards featuring the fire-breathing (technically not a) dragon commanding a significant premium compared to other cards and characters. However, of all the Charizard cards out there, the Base Set Shadowless Charizard is one of the most coveted by collectors and fans alike.
Shadowless Pokémon cards were only released in the original print of Wizards of the Coast’s 1999 Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Finding one of these Charizard cards is a challenge, and finding one in pristine condition is nearly impossible. If you find one of these rarities unscathed from years of wear and tear, you’re a lucky collector indeed!
Did you know? A new species of stem-nesting bees was discovered in Chile in 2016. Discoverer Spencer K. Monckton, a Ph.D. student at the University of Guelph in Canada at the time and an avid Pokémon fan, named the newly discovered species after Charizard. The species’ full scientific name is the Chilicola Charizard.
Total graded by CGC Trading Cards: As of mid-November 2022, there are 965 graded examples of Charizard from the Base Set – Shadowless set in the CGC Trading Cards Population Report. There are also 297 in the Base Set 1st Edition – English set and 7,276 in Base Set Unlimited – English set.

CGC Trading Cards highest graded: CGC 9 for Shadowless (23 examples)
Sales highlights: A Charizard, Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo graded CGC 9 recently sold for $16,800 in a PWCC sale in July 2022. Another Charizard, Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo graded CGC 9 sold for $12,000 in a PWCC sale in September 2022.
CGC Trading Cards Registry: As of November 2022, there are examples of Shadowless Charizard in the top two Base Set Shadowless sets in the CGC Trading Cards Registry. These include a CGC 5.5 in the top set, Gamebr8ker – Base Set – Shadowless by Gamebr8ker, and a CGC 7.5 in (Set 1) Base Set – Shadowless by PC by Rich & Nath.
