Record-breaking Charizard Among CGC-certified Heavy Hitters in August and September PWCC Sales
Posted on 9/7/2023
A 1st Edition Charizard graded by CGC Cards™ has broken the record for the highest-selling CGC-certified Pokémon card on PWCC’s platform. The record-shattering card is just one of thousands of CGC-certified TCGs, sports cards and non-sports cards that were graded through the partnership between CGC Cards and PWCC Marketplace and then sold in August and September 2023.
The Charizard, Pokémon (1999) Base Set 1st Edition Holo graded CGC Gem Mint 10 sold for $168,000 on September 3, more than doubling the previous record set by a Charizard, Pokémon (1999) Base Set Holo graded CGC Pristine 10 that realized $63,000 in a Fixed Price auction in May 2023. Charizard is one of the most popular cards in the Pokémon TCG. Loved for its iconic artwork and general rarity, Base Set Charizard often commands premium prices at auction. This example is no exception — it is one of 19 CGC Gem Mint 10 examples in the CGC Cards Population Report, with one graded higher.
Meanwhile, on August 7, 2023, a 1984 Coleccao de Cromos F1 #128 Ayrton Senna graded CGC 3 sold for $1,100. The coveted rookie card of the iconic Brazilian F1 driver is one of several CGC-certified Senna cards to sell through PWCC in recent months. As F1 continues to grow in popularity in the US, Senna's collectibles are becoming even more sought-after, especially rookie cards from the racer's debut 1984 season. The three-time champion (1988, 1990, 1991) is well-known as one of the greatest F1 drivers in the sport's history, with his impressive career infamously cut short when he died in a tragic accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
On August 28, 2023, a 1964 Topps Stand-Up Sandy Koufax Production Proof graded CGC 8.5 sold for $990. This rare version of the classic Topps baseball card stands out from its regular counterpart. The standard 1964 Topps Stand-Up Koufax features a perforated cut-out of the pitcher on a yellow and green background, with the player's name, team name and his position included on the front. This rare Proof example contains no perforations, no branding, only the player's name and an all-yellow hue to the card. Arguably the greatest pitcher of his generation, Koufax was the first pitcher to ever win three Cy Young Awards and is the youngest player ever inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame at only 36 years old in 1972.

Notable Upcoming PWCC Sales
PWCC Marketplace continues to offer CGC-certified cards in their weekly, fixed and premium auction formats. One of the highlights available in September is a 1948 Leaf #32 Warren Spahn graded CGC 8 and has a fixed price of $7,500. This is one of the earliest cards produced of the longtime Boston/Milwaukee Braves pitcher and is considered one of his two rookie cards. Since it is extremely hard to find 1948 Leaf cards in high-grade condition, it makes this example even more special, with none graded higher in the CGC Cards Population Report. Plus, there are thousands of other CGC-certified cards being offered through PWCC in September as well.
