Recently, a CGC® x JSA® certified and authenticated card featuring the signature of arguably the greatest basketball player of all time sold at auction. A 1989-90 Hoops #200 Michael Jordan graded CGC 9, with an autograph graded JSA 10, realized $8,856 on eBay through Probstein Auctions, one of the top eBay dealers in the world.
The card was estimated to sell for around $6,000; however, five unique bidders each placed bids for more than that amount by the auction's end in an attempt to add the rarity to their collection. The final realized price is now the highest-ever paid for this particular card signed by Michael Jordan and certified by any grading company.
The 1989-90 Hoops set is a nostalgic series for many basketball collectors of the late 1980s and early 1990s. While its overall value and simple design might not have stood the test of time, it's still an important issue in the history of basketball cards. Although it was created during an era of abundant production, several key cards of NBA Hall of Famers make the set popular with collectors, including David Robinson's true rookie card and a pair of early Michael Jordan cards (#21 All-Star card and #200 base card).
The #200 Michael Jordan was released in Series 1 of the Hoops set that year, which consisted of 300 cards numbered #1-300. Later, Series 2 added an additional 53 cards to the overall set, which were numbered #301-353. Each card in the Hoops set featured a simple base design of an outline of the paint and high post on a white background. Each card includes the player's name at the top and the team nickname at the bottom left and the player's position at the bottom right. The backs feature a similar border design around a small player portrait, player information, statistics by season and a short biography.
Before the release of the 1989-90 Hoops set, it was common for rookie cards to be released at least a year after the player's first season. Beginning with this set, though, and due to David Robinson's unique military obligations, Hoops released the towering center's rookie card during his actual rookie season. This began a trend that continues to this day, with card makers being timelier with their rookie releases during players' debut seasons.
While no cards in the set retained significant value long-term, the Hoops #200 is a popular addition to all Michael Jordan collections. Although a decent copy of it can be bought for less than $10, autographed versions are rare and their value skyrockets with the signature of the legendary NBA champion. Jordan is still one of the most collected athletes of all time, and recent record-breaking sales like this particular CGC x JSA certified Hoops #200 once again prove his importance to not only the world of sports but the card collecting community, as well.
Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player ever and one of the most recognizable figures in all of sports. Between his accomplishments on the hardwood and his signature sneaker line off of it, No. 23 became one of the first global NBA superstars. Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships, earned six Finals MVPs, five league MVPs, 14 All-Star selections and three All-Star Game MVPs during his astounding career. Among numerous post-retirement honors, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
