Kweh! CGC Grades Traveling Chocobo Cards, Including Gold Serialized Variant

Posted on 10/27/2025

The Traveling Chocobo variant cards from the MTG x Final Fantasy set are collector favorites, and some of the rarer types command a premium at auction.

The world of Final Fantasy is known for many things, but none are more popular — and few are as cute and cuddly — as the series’ signature bird: the chocobo. These big, fluffy birds are known across the realm for being a preferred method of transport and unwavering companions in battle. So, it was only natural that they would be included in the Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy crossover set released in mid-2025.

Chocobos were featured in 12 different MTG x FF cards (when considering cards that either directly feature “Chocobo” in the name or can summon a chocobo card). Out of these 12 cards, the most popular — and the card with the most expensive variant — is the Traveling Chocobo, a card that lets the player look at the top card of their library at any time. If the player plays a land or casts a Bird spell, or if a land or Bird the player controls triggers an ability in play, they can once more look at the top card of their library.

The normal Traveling Chocobo is a great card, but the stars of the set are the card’s special variants. Traveling Chocobo has seven additional variants along with its standard card, including a Borderless foil, neon-colored variants and a serialized gold variant. CGC has graded several of each variant in the past few months since the set released, and some have gone on to realize impressive results at auction.

Magic: The Gathering crossover sets often have a special serialized card included in the set list. These cards are extremely rare and are meant to be collector's items, rather than be played. Wizards of the Coast created a special gold-foiled Traveling Chocobo for the Final Fantasy set collaboration, which are numbered 1 through 77. The serialized rarities could only be pulled from English collector booster boxes, and collectors have less than a 0.1% chance to pull one from packs.

CGC has had the honor of grading seven of these magnificent gold Traveling Chocobo cards, including one graded CGC Pristine 10, according to the CGC Cards Population Report. One serialized Traveling Chocobo graded CGC 8 was featured in a Goldin sale in September 2025, where it realized an impressive $67,100.

A step below the serialized gold chocobo in rarity, these neon ink Traveling Chocobo cards are also exclusive to collector booster boxes. These Neon Ink chocobo cards come in four colors: yellow, green, blue and pink. There is also a Black Neon Ink Traveling Chocobo, but it is exclusive to collectors in Japan.

CGC has graded 47 total English examples of the Neon Ink Traveling Chocobos (and 9 of the Japanese Black Neon Ink variant) according to the CGC Cards Population Report. A Japanese Black Neon Ink Traveling Chocobo graded CGC Pristine 10 realized $9,000 in a Fanatics Collect Weekly auction on August 3, 2025. Meanwhile, a Blue Neon Ink Traveling Chocobo graded CGC Gem Mint 10 sold for $2,375 in a Heritage Auctions sale on July 16, 2025.
