CGC Cards Registry Featured Set: 1991-92 Upper Deck Basketball
Posted on 11/11/2025
The 2025-26 NBA regular season recently tipped off and annual basketball card sets have started to hit shelves, including Topps releasing its first licensed basketball set in 16 years. While Topps and Panini dominate the NBA card market today, another first licensed basketball set from the early 1990s is still a popular series to collect, especially for nostalgic purposes.
The 1991-92 Upper Deck Basketball set marked the card maker's debut series in the sport, expanding on their already popular catalog of cards that included baseball, football and hockey cards. Although this set was overproduced (like many others from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s), the checklist is still highlighted by several iconic cards that feature Hall of Famers, along with a handful of quality rookie cards.
As CGC revisits the first-ever Upper Deck basketball set, CGC Cards Registry set owner MorganFarl's top-ranked 1991-92 Upper Deck set showcases several fan favorites from the 500-card set. The set owner compiled 10 of the most popular cards in the series, which are all graded at least CGC Gem Mint 10, including six Top Pops, helping the set owner earn the prestigious Best in Set Type distinction.

The 1991-92 Upper Deck Basketball set is divided into two series: a Low Series (#1-400) and High Series (#401-500). The cards featured a simple but clean white border that is enhanced by a second inner border designed to look like the hardwood floor of an indoor basketball court. In-game action shots of most players were mixed with rookie player portraits, which showed young players dressed up in suits from the 1991 NBA Draft. Compared to other previous basketball sets of the 1980s that featured grainy player images, the sleek new set from Upper Deck stood out as a modern collectible.
The fronts of the cards feature the Upper Deck logo in the top right corner and either a team logo or alternate logo in the bottom right corner, such as an All-Star or NBA Draft logo. Base player cards feature the player's team name running down the right side of the card, while special cards like the All-Star issues make the distinction of the players being an East or West All-Star. Almost all of the cards include the player's name and position across the bottom border.

The backs also have some interesting features, including every card number being placed in the outline of a basketball hoop. Base player cards include an alternate in-game action shot on the back, while specialty cards feature a full-length basketball court background. The base player cards also include a career stat box running down the left side of the cards. All cards include an NBA logo in the bottom right corner and a small anti-counterfeiting Upper Deck hologram in the top left corner beside the card number, which was an advanced feature at the time.

The set showcases numerous NBA All-Stars who would go on to become Hall of Famers, including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Dominique Wilkins, James Worthy, Isiah Thomas, John Stockton, Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler and several more. The checklist also included an extensive class of rookie cards that included other key players of their generation, including Larry Johnson, Dikembe Mutombo, John Starks, Steve Smith, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony, Kenny Anderson and others.

Like many other sports cards that were released in this era, 1991-92 Upper Deck Basketball cards were printed in abundance, meaning collectors can still easily track them down today. Unopened boxes are still available for reasonable prices, which allows basketball fans and collectors who remember the early 1990s fondly to take a trip down memory lane while ripping packs of this classic series.
Since the majority of the cards are not rare, the set can make for a great entry-level rip for new basketball collectors or nostalgic veterans alike. As a staple of 1990s basketball card collecting, with an extensive selection of NBA legends among its checklist, the 1991-92 Upper Deck Basketball set is an important series that ushered NBA cards into a modern era of collectibles.
