CGC Trading Cards Registry Featured Set: Alpha Power 9

Posted on 4/25/2023

This month's featured set is sk1's Alpha Power 9 Magic: The Gathering set!

Almost every Magic: The Gathering player has heard tales of the legendary Power 9 — a set of early MTG cards that are so rare and powerful that they were subsequently banned in almost all formats of gameplay. It’s nearly impossible to assemble a full set of these mythical nine cards, but sk1 has got them all!

The Power 9 is a small set of cards that packs a powerful punch and comprise many of the most expensive Magic cards ever sold. Exclusive to the 1993-1994 Alpha, Beta and Unlimited Edition sets, the Power 9 are some of the rarest cards in their respective sets, with only about 1,000 of each printed in the Alpha set. Additionally, each of the cards are so overpowered that they are banned in nearly all forms of gameplay. The set includes the following cards:

  • Ancestral Recall
  • Black Lotus
  • Mox Emerald
  • Mox Jet
  • Mox Pearl
  • Mox Ruby
  • Mox Sapphire
  • Timetwister
  • Time Walk

All the Power 9 cards are on MTG’s Reserved List; a list of cards that Wizards of the Coast has vowed to never reprint for game balancing reasons. However, WotC has occasionally released cards that are similar in name and effect. In the parody set Unglued, the Blacker Lotus card produces four mana but requires the player to tear up the card before use. Additionally, oversized versions of the Power 9 cards featuring brand-new art have been given out to winners of the annual Magic Vintage Championship.

CGC has only graded 166 Power 9 cards in the Alpha set in total. sk1’s Alpha Power 9 set of cards graded CGC 6 or higher is 100% complete, which is impressive considering how rare they are! Check it out here!
