CGC Cards Registry Featured Set: Legends Reserved List

Posted on 8/8/2024

This month's featured CGC Cards Registry set is Fuzzy76456's Legends - Reserved List, which showcases some of the rarest cards from Magic: The Gathering's Reserved List. Don't miss a Q&A with the set owner!

Legends is Magic: The Gathering's seventh overall set and third expansion set. It was released in June 1994 and contained a total of 310 cards, including 121 rare cards. Legends was also the first set to be sold in booster packs containing 15 cards each. Legends was a very popular set, and many players found use for the set's new cards — such as Eureka and Mana Drain — in their decks. Unfortunately, many of Legends' 121 rare cards would never see reprints in future sets, because just two years later, Wizards of the Coast published the Magic: The Gathering Reserved List.

Magic: The Gathering’s Reserved List is a group of cards that Wizards of the Coast have vowed to never reprint to preserve their value on the secondary market. It was first published in 1996 and includes all rare cards from Legends that hadn’t been reprinted with a white border at the time of publication. Some of the Legends cards included in the Reserved List include The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Falling Star and Acid Rain.

All of the Legends cards on the Reserved List were never reprinted after the set’s initial release in 1994. That means that the cards in Fuzzy76456’s Legends – Reserved List set are all about 30 years old! In addition, Fuzzy76456’s set is 93% complete and even includes several cards graded CGC 9.5 and CGC Gem Mint 10, which is impressive considering their age and scarcity.

Q&A with the Set Owner, Fuzzy76456

How did you get started collecting Magic: The Gathering cards?

I started collecting Magic back in the mid-1990s, when I was playing. Then, it was solely to help build up my decks and stay competitive. I still have all of those cards, but they’re heavily played. That’s why I started collecting recently. During the pandemic, I rediscovered what I had, and it wasn’t quite in the condition I remembered. So, lately, I’ve been focusing on finding cards from those sets that are in better shape.

What makes this set unique or special to you?

When I started playing Magic, it was around the time that the Fallen Empires expansion had just come out. The older sets like The Dark, Arabian Nights and Legends were already hard to find at the time, but it was common to see them being played in decks. Magic traditionally was played for ante back in the day, so that and trading was really the only way I was able to get my hands on some of those cards. That’s why the Legends set was always so special to me. It seemed so legend[ary] to me at the time. The cards were so different from what I was used to playing with, and the set was so expansive compared to other sets releasing at the time. You would see many of the cards within the expansions coming out around that time without much issue. But with Legends, it felt like I would always find a new card that I hadn’t seen before.

Was there a card that was difficult to find? If so, do you have a story about how you were able to finally locate the card?

There are quite a few cards in this set that, I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know about before I began trying to collect the whole thing. One in particular — for whatever reason — that was very hard to find was a clean example of Cleanse (pardon the pun, I couldn’t resist). Don’t ask me why. Maybe it was the name? I wish I had an interesting story about finding it, but it just took me a bit longer than the others.

What card would you most like to add to this set?

Of course, the card I would love to add to this set would be The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. It’s just the mascot for this set, really. Unfortunately, for that reason, it’s also very expensive. There are plenty of examples available in all conditions. Someday, I’ll get my hands on one.

How has the CGC Cards Registry helped you with your collecting goals?

The CGC Cards Registry has been instrumental in my collecting recently. It helps keep my sets organized. I love being able to see where I’m at with any set, and it helps me figure out which direction I need to go next. I also like being able to compare my sets with those of other collectors.
